Merlin is bright, witty, humorous, and brave.
He doesn't want power or treasure.
He wants only for his friends to know who he really is.
He was raised by his mother in a small village called Ealdor. And he grew up friendless and lonely, for his magical powers were to be kept secret. He didn't know his father and his mother never spoke of it, so he discovered at an older age who his father was.
He was then sent to the court physician of Camelot, Gaius, by his mother in her hopes that Gaius would understand Merlin and his powers and take him under his care.
He saved the life of the king's son, Arthur Pendragon in episode one 'The Dragon's Call', and, as a reward, was appointed as his manservant. How Uther Pendragon thought that was a reward, I know not, but nevertheless, it turned out to for the best.

Arthur is arrogant, trustworthy, noble and proud.
He calls Merlin stupid, scared and useless,
but the fact that he'd scour the five kingdoms for him betrays all.
Arthur Pendragon was raised by his father in a huge city called Camelot. He never knew his mother, and his father never talks about her, so, like Merlin, he didn't know who she was until a late age. If his father, the king, forbids him to do something he wants to do, Arthur will go right ahead and do it.
Arthur is a great warrior and knight.
He's masterful with a sword and shows a good example of what a knight should be like. He boasts a lot about himself and he and Merlin occasionally get into short arguments, usually ending up in Merlin having to muck out his horses.
But all in all, Arthur is a strong and noble warrior who would lay down his life for his people in an instant.
