: "Looking to Get Pen Pal Program Started"

I am a 10th Grade English Teacher at Eastside High School in Paterson, NJ. I am looking to get a pen pal program started for some of my classes. My students are approximately 15-16 years old. They are primarily Hispanic and African-American students living in an urban area. All of my students speak English and my Hispanic students all speak Spanish as well. The school, community, parents, and students are all struggling and have little resources compared to many suburban areas around them. The students really need a more international perspective on the lives of students their age around the world. More than 80 percent of my students entered 9th grade reading below their grade level so they could really use a fun project like this that they can connect to that will also help them practice writing at the same time. My students have little opportunity to travel outside of Paterson and this is a great opportunity for them to be exposed to more of the world and expand their horizons. They are a vibrant, outgoing, and caring group of students who would be extremely excited to make connections beyond their borders and learn more about the world around them. I would be thrilled to connect my students will a class outside of the United States but even just outside of Paterson, NJ would be a step in the right direction! My email address is jlynnwall@gmail.com so please feel free to contact me at anytime to discuss this further.

This sound like a great idea. I teach Spanish in Philadelphia. I would love to correspond with your students. We have to do constructed responses every week. What do you think about giving our students a piece of artwork to comment on and having them share with each other? For example, if we both decided to show them "Guernica" or some type of work that relates to Latino culture our students could write their reaction and send it to one of your students. They could comment back and forth and maybe peer-edit. I would have my students write their's in Spanish for homework. Any suggestions or ideas? :) I look forward to hearing from you!
