Actualities : "Trump's Firing of Comey"

Hello all! I'm Matthew and I live in the USA. As many of you know (or maybe not...), the USA is currently in a state of political turmoil, and some even speculate on the verge of collapse of our democracy, and becoming an autocracy, more or less. Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Comey was fired by President Trump, as he was leading an investigation on Trump in his affiliations with Russia, most likely since the investigation wasn't going the way Trump planned. Additionally, there is talk that he'll fire the new head of the investigation, Mueller, and possible terminate the investigation all together. I think this is totally unfair, and showing that Trump thinks he is above the law, meddling in the investigation to change its outcome, which we all know, is how democracy fails. I want to know your opinions on the matter, if anyone has any, and please leave this to be a civilized debate. It'd be great to hear some opinions! Thanks! -Matthew :)

Yes, I totally agree with you Régine, and I think his presidency was the most glorious period in the whole USA's history since English colonization.

Healthcare is EXTREMELLY important. For White, Blacks, men, women, rich or poor.
It's a human right. Glory to Barrack OBAMA.

But don't you know that what you call “the pursuit of happiness” is the pure cause of most of the problems our world is facing? If you deny to be neoliberal (and I can only congratulate you for that), then you should know that the susmentioned pursuit of happiness is the only responsible for pollution, war, rape and poverty in this world.

We should rather be pursuing justice, peace and solidarity.

With respect Raphaël, your bold and drastic statements about who I am, where I am from and the land I live in is an exaggeration, foolish and very contradicting. I did not claim you to be a person of those characters, I did claim just now, that your statements were. May I say in bold letters YOU DON'T KNOW ME! Or the president in that matter, well enough to suggest his mental health is in decline or to declare that I am a neoliberal, capitalist with an 'anti' train of thought. With honor I will refrain from stating the psychological and mental disadvantages that I have diagnosed during our pleasurable sessions.
Your cushioned and feathery character you introduced in your example, I encounter often in the city in which I reside. Her choice to change and get help did not pop up when she relized she had hepatitis. It started when she said yes to the drug. That was a choice. You stated she was struggling with addiction, so she was trying to get it under control. Completely understandable. She should get the help she needs. Yet my point remains. Free health care and free government services are good, but one cannot live and depend on just that. It is in the pursuit of happiness that you gain it. Again it's work ethic. You stated free healthcare determines aether a country is just, I'm just saying that it isn't.

The thing is, there's a lot of people working so hard every day of their life who can't afford healthcare. Why could a bourgeois or a millionaire have an easy access to healthcare, but not a respectable citizen of the working class?

Visibly, Korla, with all the respect I have for you, you don't believe in equity and social justice. Most Canadians do so, and you better take a look at healthcare in Canada. Unfortunately it can't be perfect, but people don't have to pay if they get sick.

I'll give an you an example because it seems like you don't understand things easily. In USA, if a homeless women struggling with her addiction problems gets hepatitis, she's obviously going to hospital. She might be unable to afford a cure, and maybe she's going to die because she's poor. In Canada, she'll have a free access to healthcare and she'll very probably continue to live her life like each human being has the right to.

But I guess you're not even able to understand it. Instead of pursuing ideals of solidarity and humanism, you play the game of indivual responsibility and egoism. In those cases you don't even know what responsibility means. I have important news for you. Responsibility is ours, as a human community which only duty is to help each other and make everyone live decently into the biggest solidarity.

We social democrats provoked a great social progress in the 1960s and 1970s. You, Korla, are part of the neoliberal gang that made innumerable efforts, in the 1980s and 1990s, to destroy all of this progress in the name of economic liberty and bourgeois selfishness. You capitalist people have nothing to be proud of. Each time we put in place one of your ideas, that's a silly disaster.

What about Canada? What you are implying is no justice in America because there's no free healthcare. People shouldn't depend on the government. Government depends on the people. What a lazy and unfair world this would be if everyone got free everything. The greatest of people did not get where they are today without what is called a good "work ethic."

One of my mottos is "forget the rules and follow the guidelines." That means that we do not have to adapt to progress, we can be the progress. Guided by these values is how we can preserve a future to progress to. One does not have to find oneself in value but must find the moral values within himself. Upon the solid basis of values, justice and truths is what an American citizens rights are founded upon.

Les nombreux Américains qui ne se reconnaissent pas dans les valeurs “judéo-chrétinnes” seront à coup sûr les bienvenus au Québec. C'est une nation parfaitement adaptée aux progressistes de ce monde.

You are unique just like EVERYONE else who chooses to acknowledge themselves as so. America is a trend setting nation. Seems to me if one so greatly opposes to the christian-judeo values this country was founded upon, they should move to a country which seems most fitting in their personal criteria of a perfect nation. Instead of taking for granted the rights they do have, one should encourage people to make a difference.

You are right Matthew, the constitution is (or rather the declaration of independence I was referring to) is just a slip of aged parchment paper. It cannot do anything. The people have to take a stand. Americans cannot just talk the talk the talk, we must walk the walk. Which is what I hopefully implied. So many citizens are uneducated in the power that is theirs being stripped away over the years. If we the people hold designated leaders accountable, the scales will balance.

But I'm not saying this will happen, for the time being the United States is a totally legitimate democracy, with Trump being a perfectly just and able leader.

Also Korla, I'd like to argue the statements you made, governments can indeed change without the consent of the people, and a piece of paper (the Consitution) will do nothing to stop it... And as for the notion that we live in a republic, and therefore the system of government won't change into an autocracy is not true either (look at Russia or Turkey, or even Syria or North Korea, all of which are republics, but ran under the control of one political party or individual, which is what I fear will happen to the United States if all checks and balances (the INDEPENDENCE OF THE FBI) are taken away, which with Comey's firing, are beginning to happen.) The USA could evolve into a state where it is a "democracy," or a "republic," but in all legitimacy is a one-party state, as seen in MULTIPLE "democracies" and "republics" around the world...

Yes Korla, I completely understand, and while my views often clash with those of the current administration, I recognize that he is our President, and deserves to be treated as so. I just feel like the firing of Comey would be fine, except for the fact that the President was UNDER INVESTIGATION, by Comey. That's my problem with it... That's like firing the judge of a case so the outcome comes under your favor. I respect the President, but I feel like it is extremely suspicious and unjust to fire the man that is investigating your administration, and if the entire govnement is made up of supporters of one side, making it so the administration could get away with anything, no matter the legality, is how democracies (and republics) die. It's happened multiple times before in history, and I really hope we are not seeing a similar situation unfold currently. Thanks for the replies! -Matthew

It is important to say that America is a democracy IN a republic. The only way President Trump got into office is because, the majority voted for him. So to say that the majority didn't vote for him would be a false accusation. Thanks to our founding fathers the American way of government cannot change without the people's consent to it. The US Declaration of Independence States "...that whenever any form government becomes destructive to these ends (of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness), it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it..." The only way law and justice can stray from the people is if Americans sit around and complain without doing anything about it, which thankfully only a minority of people are doing. As for Comey being fired, there is probably another side of the story, which will not be released till a later date in history.
To Raphael: do you know President Trump personally? That would be the only way to conclude his mental health is failing (which I doubt). If not I must say you are jumping to a very extreme conclusion. The big picture cannot always be seen with small eyes.

Yes, I strongly oppose Trump's ultraconservative views too. And I tend to think that his mental health is declining.

His predecessor, Mister Barack Obama, worked so hard to make USA a more green, fair and peaceful country. He wanted United States to be more like Canada. Trump is destroying all of these social innovations and that worries me. I'm so sad for all of you American people. You didn't even vote for him.
