| I know that when I was learning language, teachers would use songs to aid in memorization. Anything put to a rhythm is easier to remember than just plain words. We sang about body parts, alphabet, numbers, and much more.

http://www.eslpartyland.com/teachers/music/musicimpressions.htm This is another interesting activity that would help to learn the context of songs for more advanced students.
I think that in general it depends on the age of the student and their language ability.
