I know that when I was learning language, teachers would use songs to aid in memorization. Anything put to a rhythm is easier to remember than just plain words. We sang about body parts, alphabet, numbers, and much more.
http://www.musicalenglishlessons.org/index-ex.htm This site has many English as a second language activities to teach grammar.
http://www.eslpartyland.com/teachers/music/musicimpressions.htm This is another interesting activity that would help to learn the context of songs for more advanced students.

I think that in general it depends on the age of the student and their language ability.
Good luck on your thesis!

if that could help you , our 1-2-3-4 grade frensh teacher used to sing to us the alphabet (frensh) song to help us memorize it (in frensh) besides "frére jacque's song (ding dang dong lool) and some national songs like the famous (min jibalina , and the national hyme ...) and that's pretty much it ...
