The X Factor...

Before the boys were the boy band they are today, they were normal teenagers wanting to live their dreams as singers. In hopes of becoming solo artists, each entered into the X Factor. [Keep in mind they did not know the other existed until later]
One of the judges there was Simon Cowell, whom all of you should be familiar with. [American Idol]

None of the boys made it through for Individual's but Simon had a plan for them. He took them aside and said they would put them through again but only as a group. They had to make their decision then and there, or else they could just go home back to their everyday lives. So, the boys decided to give it a try...They went through Bootcamp, etc.
[I'm not going to give so much info on this because I really don't know complete details]






These are the songs each of the boys sang for their individual auditions:
Harry Styles sang "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder
Louis Tomlinson sang "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's
Liam Payne sang "Cry Me a River" the Michael Buble version
Niall Horan sang "So Sick" by Ne-Yo
Zayn Malik sang "Let Me Love You" by Mario


While the boy's were auditioning as a group in the X Factor they created Video Diaries which can be viewed on YouTube.
They aren't really serious at all. Yes, they talk a little about their performances and what not.
I guarantee you will laugh a lot!
This is where most of the inside jokes come from that you might hear hardcore fans talk about, like "No!" Jimmy protested, carrots, Kevin (From their Tour Diaries though), Peter Pan, Simple Yet Effective, etc...

Their first song as a group was "Torn" (original sang by Natalie Imbruglia, you should search it on YouTube) Directionators usually think that their first song as a group was What Makes You Beautiful, but they are wrong...what do you expect out of Directionators?
