| Medieval history
Medieval history starts form the overthrow of Zagwe dynasty. It is characterized with many histories but here are some.
At this period it was first time one capital city was used for long time, Gondar. The well known king of this time was King Fasillades.
He proclaimed the “close door policy” which made Abyssinia; later Ethiopia had no contact with the outer world for about 150 years, except with Egypt and Palestine. This policy was announced because his father King Sesonyous, the first catholic king was over thrown because of his new religion; he was not accepted by the Orthodox bishops which are very respected by the people. King Fasillades don’t want to be overthrown so he stopped the entrance of Catholics to the country and send out Portuguese citizens who turned his father to Catholic.
This king is mainly remembered for his building of Fasilledes castle and place. They are very modern and beautiful; now it’s a tourist main site in Ethiopia. And also he was the period’s most powerful and rich king.
Zemene Mesafint was a period of war between “Mesafints” meaning Princes and land lords (bandits). It was the one of the worst period of the time. Prince kills his own elder brother to be king, prince kills his own father to take his power, and the country were divided into many states and each states were lead not by the king, by armed land lords. The king at Gondar was like a figure head. There was endless war between landlords (bandits). This time many people died and many wives were widowed. One of the bandits who made an end to Zemene Mesafint was, Tewodros.
