Carnival Music
As, since its very beginning, the carnival of Patras was not a traditional celebration but a carnival feast, its music and dances would consist of contemporary hits and beats. Mazurka, tango, waltz, Charleston and fox-trot in the pre-war era, rock and disco in the more recent decades.
Over the past few years, the parties and processions are dominated by Latin American rhythms - setting the beat for the parade - and contemporary Greek and foreign hits. The procession is best described as a mobile disco.
"Vale to domino Lenio" [Wear your domino Lenio], composed in 1909 by the Italian musician Julio Coffino, remains the Carnival Anthem. Over the last decade, quite a few local musicians have written carnival songs. |
