Finding the Perfect Pup

So, the decision is made. Your family is going to do something that will change their lives. You're going to welcome a new, cute little puppy into your home. You know the personality that the dog has to have, and you've decided on a breed that goes with your lifestyle. There's only one thing left to do - find the puppy. You've heard peices of advice such as "Always pick the first dog that runs up to you", but perhaps these rules shouldn't always be followed if it means it's not the dog you're really after?
Picking Out The Pup

Here are some things that people say about choosing pups that haven't turned out to be as good advice as thought:

1. You shouldn't get a pup if the mother isn't in with the pups when you go to see them
This may seem very sensible and people can be alarmed when they see a pup without it's mother if they follow this rule, but sometimes it's best if the mother isn't there when you're around. Some bitches may be very sweet and gentle but could be very protective of their young, so for safety reasons they are kept in another room when you arrive, and if everything else says "Ok" then just ask the breeder about why the mother isn't there.

2. Always go for the first pup that come up to you
You certainly shouldn't go for a dog that runs away and hides, but if you're not looking for a bold puppy who could be slightly harder to train than other and you want a dog that would be good with young children, you might not want pick that pup. If you're looking for a puppy that won't bee too much trouble, intelligent, and doesn't have to get along with noisy children, then maybe the shy pup who watches you and seems to be thinker could be brilliant.

3. Only choose a dog who likes to be picked up
This can be quite scary for a puppy - they have just been lifted off the ground and high into the air by a huge human being that seems to be examining them and prodding them. You must remember that a pup is bound to be nervous as it's still very young and sees differently to we do. A better option is to get down on your hands and knees and let the puppy study you before you start petting it.

If you follow what I and many dog behaviourists reccomend you're more likely to find the dog of your dreams.
