 L'ours blanc (Ursus maritimus), aussi connu sous le nom d'ours polaire, est un grand mammifère omnivore (à prédominance carnivore) originaire des régions arctiques. C'est, avec l'ours kodiak et l'éléphant de mer, l'un des plus grands carnivores terrestres et il figure au sommet de sa pyramide alimentaire.
Parfaitement adapté à son habitat, l'ours blanc possède une épaisse couche de graisse ainsi qu'une fourrure qui l'isolent du froid. La couleur blanche de son pelage lui assure un camouflage idéal sur la banquise et sa peau noire lui permet de mieux conserver sa chaleur corporelle. Pourvu d'une courte queue et de petites oreilles1, il possède une tête relativement petite et fuselée ainsi qu'un corps allongé, caractéristiques de son adaptation à la natation. L'ours blanc est parfois considéré comme un mammifère marin semi-aquatique2, dont la survie dépend essentiellement de la banquise et de la productivité marine. Il chasse aussi bien sur terre que dans l'eau. Son espérance de vie est de 15 à 30 ans.
Cette espèce vit uniquement sur la banquise autour du pôle Nord, au bord de l'océan Arctique. L'Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature UICN estime la population d'ours blancs à environ 26 000 individus3. Elle considère l'espèce comme vulnérable (VU), principalement en raison du réchauffement climatique et du bouleversement de son habitat qui en résulte. En 2015, Morten Jørgensen conclut au contraire que la principale menace pesant sur l'ours polaire est la chasse, loin devant le changement climatique, et estime la population inférieure à 20 000 individus4.
Animal charismatique, l'ours blanc a un fort impact culturel sur les peuples inuits, qui dépendent toujours de sa chasse pour survivre. Il a également marqué la culture populaire via certains de ses représentants comme Knut, ou encore l'art avec la sculpture d'ours blanc réalisée par François Pompon. |

 Hi guys!, i am new to this forum and, I LOVE POLAR BEARS! They really need our help! I want to increase the number of polar bears and I would do anything to stop them from being so endangered! Brandi is right! The sea ice is shrinking and the polar bears are slowy dying. Has any ever heard of Knut(a.k.a the cutest polar bear)? Well, he showed people what their gonna miss when the polar bears extint. A scientist also predicted that polar bears will become extinct in our lifetime but, we don't want that to happen do we? Then we need to make a change.
Plant a tree- "Trees help reduce the amount of harmful gases in the air"
Ride your bike or walk- try to carpool or walk with friends instead of using a single car. tell friends and ask if the can help you. Make a clud for goodness sake. those polar bears need our help and helpin them is just what we're goin to do, right? |

My favorite animal is the Polar Bear because I care about them so much. I hate to see those photos of them drowning, so I feel the pain and fear along side them. I wish people would understand that animals have feelings like us, and if there were a tsunami in your town, killing your family, you'd be heartbroken like the Polar Bears. They're such sweet animals, why do they deserve us murdering them? |

| | I live in Scotland and me , my Mum and my brother went a wee trip to a zoo in Newtonmore and the polar bear that was in Canada was there(Her name is Mercedez) and they said she wasn't behaving very well and she was also pacing in her enclosure. (Poor polar bear) I feel so sorry for all the polar bears that are suffering. :( |
