| Well, despite my country's relatively young age (especially compared to that of China), we have quite an eventful history. Putting aside major, national events like the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the two World Wars, the individual states have interesting histories, too. For example, my home state (Florida) was settled by the Spanish in 1513. They established the first permanent city in America, known as St. Augustine, which still stands today. The French also settled the western part, and the state fell into British hands in 1763, eventually becoming a U.S. state in 1845. Florida is still home to a large, vibrant Hispanic community. |
