Tohru Honda (age 17) is an orphaned high school student who, after meeting Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma,learns that the thirteen members of the Sohma family are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac and turn into their animal forms if they are embraced by anyone of the opposite gender or when their bodies come under a great deal of stress.

Yuki Sohma (age 17) is shown as an attractive, reserved, and accomplished young man with many admirers, but who finds being friendly difficult. Yuki is possessed by the rat, the animal that according to legend was first to arrive at the initial zodiac banquet, Yuki is talented at anything he tries (except cooking and cleaning).

Kyo Sohma (age 17) is short-tempered, impulsive, and rude, but that is only one side to this complex character. He doesn't like to show his feelings and is very protective of those he cares for. He transforms into an orange cat whenever he is hugged by the opposite gender or when his body comes under a great deal of stress. This animal is not in the Chinese zodiac, but legend says would have been if it had not been tricked by the rat into missing the induction feast.Also, this could and probably is why he and Yuki (the rat) do not get along very well. As part of his curse, Kyo transforms into a "monster", that resembles a dinosaur mixed with a rabbit, whenever his Juzu beads bracelet are taken off.

Shigure Sohma (age 27) is laid-back and anything but solemn and according to the first episode, he says that he's a nonviolent peacemaker. He is a flirt, a tease, and often acts like a pervert. He likes to tease Tohru about going on a date with her, and also says he likes high school girls.He transforms into the dog of the Chinese zodiac whenever he is hugged by the opposite gender or his body comes under a great deal of stress. Shigure is one of the oldest members of the zodiac.

Hatsuharu Sohma, age 16, often called Haru, is the ox of the Chinese zodiac. Hatsuharu is shown as having a Yin and Yang personality, which is related to the ox's traditional personality.He is an older-brother figure to the younger zodiac members, and is usually calm and placid, but, if provoked, can become enraged.The Sohmas call these two sides of his personality his "white" and "black" sides; his hair is white with black roots, and his zodiac form is a black-and-white spotted cow.

Ayame Sohma (age 27), is the snake of the Chinese zodiac, and Yuki's older brother, the young man with the longest hair in human appearance. Ayame is depicted as vivacious, flamboyant, self-confident, and self- centered, with a knack for annoying Yuki and Kyo (one of the few things they initially agree upon).He runs a shop, named after himself, that sells custom-made "romantic costumes" such as frilly dresses and maid costumes with the help of Mine Kuramae, his seamstress.

Hatori Sohma (age 27), is the seahorse of the Chinese zodiac and, like his father before him, the private doctor to the Sohma family. He is responsible for erasing memories (using a form of hypnosis that is handed down in his line of the family) of those outsiders who discover the Sohma family secret, such as Yuki's childhood playmates.

Momiji Sohma (age 16), is the rabbit of the Chinese zodiac. Momiji is shown as a cute, cheerful boy who hides a sad family life behind his sunny demeanor. Momiji is older than he initially appears,and Tohru is surprised to learn he is only a year younger than her.

Kisa Sohma (age 12-14), is the tiger of the Chinese zodiac. She is shown as a cute but very shy and withdrawn girl. When Kisa starts seventh grade, her classmates harass and ostracize her because of her naturally tawny hair and golden eyes, an effect of her curse, and the cause of her shyness. She does not tell her worried mother what is happening and stops speaking; when this distresses her mother even further, she runs away and is found by Hatsuharu. Tohru helps Kisa feel good about herself.

Hiro Sohma (age 11–13), is the sheep/ram of the Chinese zodiac and the youngest of the cursed Sohmas. He is shown as a very intelligent but verbally aggressive and smart-mouthed who is not very likeable. Hiro loves Kisa and hates Tohru because she unwittingly monopolizes Kisa's time and admiration.

Kagura Sohma

Kagura Sohma (age 19), is the boar of the Chinese zodiac. She is shown as a girlish young woman with great strength, and the impulsive behavior associated with those born in her zodiac year.The latter often takes the form of berating and beating up Kyo, to whom she insists she is engaged. When Kagura was seven and Kyo was five, when he was all alone because he carried the curse of the cat, she played with him,and one day threatened him into proposing to her (using a knife in the manga,a boulder in the anime).

Ritsu Sohma

Ritsu Sohma (age 21–22), is the monkey of the Chinese zodiac. He is shown as a beautiful but unstable young man with very low self-esteem and a tendency to overreact. He apologizes frantically for everything, even things that are not his fault. In this, he takes after his mother,the hostess of the Sohma family's hot spring,whose job he is in training to take over. Ritsu dresses in women's clothing because he says he then feels less pressure from society, and is initially mistaken for a woman by Tohru Honda because of his long hair and beauty.

Akito Sohma

Akito Sohma is the head of the Sohma family and very frail. He often gets sick and runs fevers, and Hatori Sohma claims half his doctor's work is tending to Akito, who he says "specializes in getting sick." Akito's age is not given, but He is a few years younger than Ritsu. Akito is shown as short-tempered and abusive, and has physically and emotionally scarred many Sohmas. While part of the Sohma family curse, Akito is not possessed by a spirit of the Chinese zodiac, but rather fulfills the role of the Jade Emperor, a figure from the stories about the origins of the zodiac; He describes himself as the "god" of the zodiac, the "one who controls the Zodiac", and the "master of their souls.
