Hilltop Cafe
Money, cash, coins, and shillings whatever people call it these days. I hate money. Well… I don’t completely hate money. Whoever invented this money stuff I wish they hadn’t. I mean, me and my family are terribly, suffering. Guess what, Money! We run out of it. Imagine if it wasn’t invented we could get one of them really nice strawberry cheese cakes, those really nice ones with maybe a little chocolate coco and a big cherry on top. Sorry, I just want to be a Chef when I’m older but I still want to go to school so I can count money and that. The point is I want to now if I’m academic or not. “Katy in this Café this instant!” Yelled mum doing her nails and leaving the job to me. “Okay, I was just erm… Trying to learn my- nothing. Don’t worry I’ll be there.” I yelled back. I put my green apron with a picture of a creamy hot chocolate with smoke coming out on. I saw Stella. I was so pleased to see her! “Have you got that page from A Christmas Carol? The one I need to read?” I said happily. (A Christmas Carol is actually quite good. I thought Charles Dickens wrote really bad stories. Seriously. That’s what I thought.) “Yep, I got it! The exciting bit.(If you have’nt read a Christmas Carol then sorry because this is going to spoil your fun.)The one with the last ghost. The scariest cruelest ghost of all time.Yeah, I’ve got him. Here you go” She said with tension and then the tension rapidly faded away.
I gave Stella her favorite milkshake, bubblegum flavored milkshake. “On the house. You deserve it!” I said smiling.
Stella slurped it up.” Kay Kay! Kay Kay! Listen, listen.” Emma said.” What is it Emma and Eliza you know I’m busy. The last ghost is going to get you if you don’t go away. Otherwise I won’t let you make a milkshake! Or even cook.” I said trying my very best to scare them. “So what Kay!” They started to chant in my ear.” Okay, Okay! Go play with Stella!” I said trying to shut them up.” Sorry Stella two very whiney little girls want to play with you. I just can’t stand them so…”I said.

Emma and Eliza are so adventurous and very imaginative that it’s so annoying! Adventurous and imagination are a bad combination for two whiney 3-year olds. It’s good to be imaginative and adventurous but these monsters called Emma and Eliza, are just to energetic and mad so it’s extremely hard for an 11-year old all by herself to control them.
Mum and Dad don’t care. So I guess It’s all up to me. Guess what I found in the draw. Two tickets to Spain. I thought they said we were running out of money and now they brought to two tickets to Spain. God knows what there going to do next. Are they going to runaway? Have they been threatened and asked to buy two tickets to Spain so the criminal can runaway? Nobody knows apart from those two. “Oh, I don’t mind babysitting them or playing with them I always wanted to a younger brother or sister.” I stared right in her eyes. “You, Stella Maguire want to baby sit the most violent, energetic, crazy three year olds in this small Café?” I said as I couldn’t believe my eyes. Stella nodded quickly. “ Do, you mind if I take them out to the park to play. I’ll buy them ice - creams.” What do you think? I want to get rid of them! So yeah, bring them back at Lunchtime because apparently are parents want to talk to us.” I said as if an angel touched me. Yes! Emma and Eliza are gone! And I have the whole café to myself! Halleluiah! Mum walked in.

Emma and Eliza are quiet aren’t they? Where are they?” Mum asked politely for once! “Erm… they’re gone with Stella in the park. I said nearly whispering. “ You did what! You let them go to the park with a 13-year old stranger anything could happen! Mum yelled.” She is not a stranger. She is a helpful girl who looks out for people like me! Not someone who does their nails and is lazy. She actually cares for someone, unlike you for a mother!” I said not thinking twice. “ How dare you! Me and your Dad were going to run off to Spain and not tell you. That’s exactly why I wanted to talk to you at lunchtime. So at least I cared. I might as well run off with your Dad right now and wait at the airport early. We did have money by the way and we were saving up! ”She yelled as hard as she could. Some tears rolled down my eyes but I tried to be strong. I have to face up to this and not sit and cry. My own mother doesn’t even care for me. I don’t have any family apart from them. “ Once! One time. You were going to runaway anyhow. You probably thought you should pay your one and only respect to your children before you run off to Spain in the sunshine as if you had a second honey moon. Well, why should I care anymore. Your going to runaway and never come back. Or maybe you do come back, but only to steal money I bet. ”I said as if this was the only thing I wanted to say to them at this point. I knew they were my parents and this was the only time I was going to speak to them but I just said how I felt at that point and I didn’t think twice.” It’s your responsibility to take care of Emma and Eliza now.

I had a stressful life taking care of you and your sisters. Your dad had to work I had to run the Café. Now, you will know how it feels. I’m going to pack. Bye Katy gave my last and only love to Emma and Eliza because me and dad won’t be coming back.” She said calmly. She kissed me on the forehead and ran upstairs and packed. Dad was already packing his bag. I looked at my watch and it was 12:00pm exactly. Stella walked in just in time with Emma and Eliza. They both had strawberry ice-cream over their face and were pretending to be airplanes with Stella. “ How is things going Katy. You have red eyes. Have you been crying? Me and your sisters had so much fun it was great! I should do it again next time.” She said kindly.” I’m so glad they had a great time at the park. From now I want the best for them. Stella, me and my mum had a fight and she said she was going to runaway with dad, she said it was up to me to take care of Emma and Eliza. So I have to take care of them now. If they are ill I need to buy the medicine and take care of them. I’m hoping social services don’t find out otherwise we would have foster parents and even though I’m not a fan of the two monsters we would be apart and we wouldn’t know each other when we are older.” I said slowly, taking each breath carefully. “ So when do they leave? “ Stella asked. I glanced at my watch. “ Right, now,” I whispered. I saw them go Emma and Eliza didn’t notice they were busy playing airplanes. As they walked pass I froze I didn’t want to move. I had a good look at them and watched every action they did.

They got out the door and a taxi was waiting outside. They rushed off and Emma and Eliza came up to me. “ Kay can we have pizza for lunch. Pretty please. ”Emma and Eliza said right in my face. I smiled and tried my very best to look happy. “ Sure! Pepperoni pizza your favorite and just to make it extra special I’ll let both of you put the cheese and pepperoni on. First I just need to serve a chocolate pancake to a customer and have a little chat to Stella, and you can help me cook!” I said happily. They both ran around happily with the paper doll kit Stella gave them as a present. “They seem to like that paper doll kit you gave them! ”I said thanking Stella. “Guess, what they call me now. Auntie Stella! Well, it looks like they have an Auntie!” She said laughing. “Oh yes, I nearly forgot. I booked you free learning classes at my school. Before you say who is going to run the café. I will sort that out you enjoy those classes and learn!” Stella said generously. “ Thanks, Stella! You helped me to learn you took care of Emma and Eliza. You are even willing to work in the café I don’t know I would do without you Auntie Stella!” I said giggling. Stella nudged me.

“Don’t push your luck!” She said a little embarrassed. ”Well I got to go sadly, but I’ll ring you on your landline and if you earn enough money you might even buy a phone! ”Stella said in a rush. “Bye! ”I called out as she quickly rushed out the Café. “Emma and Eliza go upstairs it’s your bath time I just need to close the café and I’ll run the bath for both of you!”I said. There was no more customers left and It was the closing time so, I went to the door and turned the sign the other way round and locked the door. I went upstairs and I walked inside the small, squashy bathroom and ran the bath. I put some soap in and Eliza’s favorite rubber duck and I stopped the tap.”Eliza, Emma. Get in the bath. Once they got in it, I walked down stairs to the kitchen in the café and cooked the dinner. It was spaghetti with meatballs and strawberry milkshake. I chopped the tomatoes; I layed the table and I popped the meatballs in the pan. I was absolutely exhausted. Mum and dad are probably in Spain right now. In a five star hotel, waiting for the next day to come so they can buy a huge villa in Mijas and see a beautiful view. After, I cooked, I went upstairs to get Emma and Eliza dressed for bed time and so they could eat their dinner.” I hope you like Spaghetti because that’s what your having for dinner. Auntie Stella probably filled your bellies. So I don’t think you will be eating much. They came down for dinner. We sat down.” Kay, Where is mummy and daddy?” Eliza asked me.”Er… They are on holiday they will be back soon I promise. Don’t worry about it just eat your dinner” I replied. Emma and Eliza didn’t think about it then. They slurped the spaghetti and gulped down the milkshake and were so tired they went to bed! I picked up the landline phone and rung Stella for a little chat because I was a little lonely.

“How’s everything going Katy?” She said obviously concerned about me.”Okay, it’s a strange thing to be honest. An 11- year old taking care of monsters! I will absolutely kill you if you tell social services about my parents! Promise not to tell? Cross your heart?” I said. “Cross my heart hope to die stick a needle in my eye! I’ll never tell even if we fall out!” replied Stella. “You better mean that Stella!” I said. “I’m going to bed I’m absolutely exhausted. Luckily I’m going to those free learning lessons! I don’t know what I would do if I were to go to University!” I said with a little curiosity. I said good bye and I closed the phone done. I was definitely going to bed! The next day I woke up, got dressed, had breakfast and opened the Café. I ran it until Stella came to take over my job so I could go to the learning lesson. “Oh, thanks a billion Stella right. Paper and pencil for Maths… Check! Paper and pen for English…. Check! Okay, I need to go now. Bye Stella and the little monsters!” I said doing an impression of a deadly killer monster. Stella seemed to be okay. I thought I should bye a present for Stella for helping me so much so after my classes, I went to the best florist in town and brought lilies and roses Stella’s favorite flowers. I also went to the sweet store. I brought beautiful, yummy
Belgium chocolates with a silvery-lavender colored ribbon tied neatly outside the box. I came back to the café and hid the presents behind my back.” THANK-YOU!”I said with a humungous smile on my face. I showed Stella the flowers and chocolates I brought for her. “Thanks Katy you didn’t need to you know. It’s just what friends do.” She said. “I had to Stella, for all the stuff you did for me, I really had to!” Hey! Stella gets in that car. Remember were going to Australia!” Stella’s dad said. “What! You’re going to Australia half way across the world.” I said gob smacked.

“I was going to tell you. I hope you’re not angry I’ll ring you and everything!” she said rushing. Great. No friends or family to help me baby sit or anything. “Are you going to live there?” I asked quickly. “Err… Yes… but, I’ll visit and keep in touch with you okay.” Stella said as her last reply. I was definitely lonely. I know I am. No family or friends nothing apart from the windy air, rustling trees and whiney monsters. I’m not looking forward to Christmas at all. No presents, no turkey no anything. BANG! It was mum and dad. I knew they wouldn’t last a minute. “We got scammed in Mijas. We brought a villa for £100. It was a bargain, and now we are in £900,000 in debut.” They said unhappily and stressfully. “Serves you right. You shouldn’t of went to Spain and left your kids in a different country. You were lucky social services didn’t find out! They would split me and Emma and Eliza up. We would have foster parents!” I said. Ring Ring... I picked it up.”

It’s me. My dad knows about your parents he rung social services. There on there way now.” Stella said nervously. “He must have overheard. He probably was the customer I gave that chocolate pancake to. He has to of overheard it. Sorry I really need to go Stella!” I said. “Mum, dad. Social Services know! There on the way! And there right here…”I said drifting away. “Can we have a chat with you … is it Mr. & Mrs. Brooks?” Said social worker, Ella McDonald. “Okay, Katy knows the story can she talk to you as well?” Asked Mum and dad. “If she wants too. Oh, sorry. I didn’t introduce myself! My name is Ella Mc Donald. I work for social services. I had a Report from Mr. Maguire. He over heard Katy talking about you running away and reported it to social services so it is important you answer these questions for your child’s safety.” She said. After she asked us the questions she said she would visit us again tomorrow to get the story straight.

“We need to runaway all of us. I understand how important you are Katy and how Emma and Eliza are important. We are going to live happily ever after! You’re going to go to a school and Emma and Eliza are going to nursery.” She said excitedly.” We will live happily ever after!” I said. ”Yeah, happily ever after!” Mum and dad replied.
The next day, Katy’s mum and dad were a little fishy. “Hey, do you the plan?” Mum whispered to dad when me and Emma and Eliza, weren’t listening. “Is the plan this? Send them to school, runaway at night and with all the money?” Dad said a little clueless. “Yeah, that’s exactly the plan but we have to hide the bags when we runaway okay?” Mum said sternly. “Oh! Hi sweetie just doing a fried breakfast for tomorrow!” lied mum. “Okay, mum. I haven’t had any proper food since you were gone. So I am looking forward to a fried breakfast!” I said as happy as I could be. Mum gave a quick smile and went upstairs with dad.” I knew fairy tales didn’t just happen like that. I’m not 4-years old anymore. When Auntie Jacky used to read fairy tales to me!” I said. “Oh yeah, I remember that song we used to do. It goes like this: Sugar plums, Ice cream twists, and tasty, chocolate biscuit bits. Singing tunes, making cards, making cards that make you fart! – Ha-ha! I loved that so much! Well, now she’s dead! Well, hey. Where’s the sad violin music! Anyway when my auntie was here I turned into a complete comedian! Laugh, Laugh giggle giggle” I said remembering the old times with Jacky. “Right, you two we are going to that school up that lane to see if you can get into it.

That school. Is it called Cherry Klinger primary? Strange name eh?” Dad said, pointing out where it was. I put my Jeans on and a light pink t - shirt with roses on and a little blue cardigan. Nobody replied to dad that moment. We just walked up the lane looking at all the plants and houses next door. I loved the Roses in the Wilson’s house. Roses are my favorite flower. I was starting to think about Mum and Dad. Were they doing this because they felt sorry for us? Or were they doing it because they just wanted to cheer me and my sisters up and then just runaway? I didn’t have a single clue what was going on. I really, really didn’t. One minute they hate me the next they absolutely love me and don’t care about anyone else. This is all so strange. I think me and my sisters should runaway before my mum and dad does. I don’t know how we are going to survive, but I will protect them and try to make their life much happier than mine. I better ring Stella! I completely forgot! After we visited this rubbish school of mine. I thought I should talk to Stella on the phone, but I just keep thinking of that snooty girl glaring at me. Staring at me and talking to her friends about me, I could tell because she kept pointing at me and sometimes even talked out loud so you could her a mile away.

I didn’t want to go to that stuck-up, rubbish heartless snooty, vandalized school. I rang Stella. I told her all about the snooty girl and about how me and the little monsters are going to runaway to the woods and live there. She was, absolutely pleased that we were going to runaway. I don’t know why, but she was happy enough. I ran upstairs and shoved all my clothes in a super- large suitcase with teddies and books and everything in my room. My blanket and pillow. I had a separate bag for food and drink. I also packed Emma and Eliza’s bags and hid all my bags under the bed. When it was Midnight I was going to wake up my sisters and runaway to Golden Leaf woods. I brought match sticks and a thermal, which I filled with hot chocolate, for me and the little monsters to share. When it was time for bed I made sure I got everything ready for our runaway. I decided not to do at midnight because then, I wouldn’t see a thing. So when mum and dad are downstairs watching television than ill wake up the two sisters and runaway to the woods and do a fire to warm ourselves up. So, dad and mum was watching television. So I woke up Emma and Eliza and told them not to say a single word. They didn’t luckily. We ran downstairs quietly and ran all the way to the forest, it was cold and freezing and I was shivering. I cuddled Emma and Eliza and they cuddled their teddy bears.

I got a lot of sticks and wood and made a fire using my matches. Emma and Eliza all huddled up against the fire to warm themselves. I opened my suitcase. I got the thermal and got three cups and gave two cups to Emma and Eliza. I poured the hot chocolate into their cups. I also poured some hot cocoa into my cup for myself. I got the blankets and sleeping bags and layed them out. For Emma and Eliza I gave those three blankets and a sleeping Bag because it was very cold, but then I realized something. Wolves and Foxes. They could injure us or even worse, kill us! I took a torch out my bag and out the light against my watch, it was as dark as midnight, but then I realized it was midnight! I couldn’t go back now. It was to dark to go back. Emma and Eliza were already sleeping. I know mum and dad might runaway, but if we runaway they would stay. They only wanted us to get out of the café. The night closed in and sunlight came. Luckily, we weren’t hurt, but as soon as we got up me and the monsters walked all the way home before anything bad happened. Well, mum and dad ran away, and that was a large adventure me and my sisters had well I kept in touch with Stella!
