Picard or also called Chti, is the language which was spoken here while centuries, it is pretty similar to french, classified as a roman language.
Yet, many words are totally different from the french and are sometimes closer to some latin bases with some germanic influences.
It's more called Picard in the administrative region of picardy, and more called Chti in the administrative region of Nord Pas De Calais.
As you can see on the map above, it's(was) also spoken in a little part of Belgium(our dear neighbours:D)
That dialect, even if that stays the same language, varies a lot from a place to another, therefore, we can distinguish two principal original places:
-In the actual area of Amiens,
-In the the "flat-land" that's to say the area gathering the biggest cities: lille, arras, lens and so on...
Nowadays Chti/Picard is only spoken in some famillies, it isn't taugh at school(or just in some punctual cases) yet it can be studied at universities.
Many texts were written in Chti/Picard for the Middle Age which has permitted to have a clear idea of that language.
During centuries, with revolutionnar system, picard tended to disapear, but for the two last centries; with the reaffirmation of the regional identity, particularly while the 19c, many authors used chti...
even though, with some reforms in the last few years, this dialect has been reinstored, it keeps a negative idea in some people's mind, considered as a language reserved for the uncultivated people...
On the way we are, it will only exist in the books in a few years, nowadays only some intellectuals and old people can speak it flently..
