Manila Through My Eyes - Favorite places outside Manila

Even though this blog's title is 'Manila through my eyes', I would also like to tell a little something about places outside Manila that I also like.

Favorite places outside Manila

Cebu
Quezon City
Makati
Malabon
Subic

Cebu City is like Manila, although the traffic is less of a problem. My parents both came from Cebu (though not from the city). I haven't really gotten around much in Cebu City, but I see a lot of foreigners in Cebu. Cebu is a popular place for foreigner retirees. Cebu City offers the modern convenience found in Manila minus the traffic. I also see a lot of business owned by foreigners in the area. Pictured above is one of the popular hotels in Cebu City. There are lots of things to see here, like the Taoist Temple, the Magellan's Cross, etc. However, there are a lot of things to see outside the city too. We always pass by Moalboal whenever we visit my mother's hometown, and I heard it's a popular place for tourists because of its beaches.

Quezon City is the former capital of the Philippines. It is also the most populated area in the country. Cubao is like the foremost commercial district in Quezon City. At the center of it is the Araneta Center, it's a 35 hectare commercial estate chained owned by the Araneta family. There are also a lot of thrift stores in the area. I also recommend visiting the University of the Philippines. Pictured above is the famous oblation statue found at the campus. It's a huge place (they even have jeepneys inside to make going around the campus easier) and worth the visit (I think).

Makati is said to be the financial center in the Philippines (the Central Business District can be found here). It's a highly commercialized area, where you can find world class research universities as well as high end malls housing upscale brands. Makati is also famous for its night life. A lot of foreign embassies can be also found here.

Honestly, there's nothing much to see here. It's not a popular tourist spot, and even many Filipinos overlook Malabon. But I've lived here almost half of my life so it holds a special place in my heart. Hehe. Pictured above is Pancit Malabon (a popular dish here in the Philippines). There are a few ancestral houses in Malabon of historical value and I recommend visiting them when you can because the area floods easily and is gradually sinking. I highly urge you to visit this blog to know more about the quaint charms of Malabon (http://www.mymalabon.com)

Subic (Subic Bay Naval Base) is the former home of one of the largest US military facilities outside the US. The former location of the Naval base now hosts many tourist attractions such as casinos, beach resorts, parks, and historical artifacts. Another place to visit would be Zoobic Safari. It's currently the only tiger safari in the Philippines. I went here a few years ago, when they are still not fully open to the public. Even though they were still working on most of their attractions when I went there, I still enjoyed my visit.
