Ayu bowan in Sri Lanka !

Ayu Bowan ! Hello !
Welcome here!

My name is Lucile, I'm 17 and I'm from France.

My favourite country is Sri Lanka. This country, also called "the Pearl of the Indian Ocean" is the most wonderful of the world. Although many people don't know about that country, I'm going to show you some secrets of that sublime country.

Lastly, Sri Lanka was also known as Ceylon.

Sri Lanka is an island near India. That country has 2 official languages which are Sinhalese and Tamil. But English is also spoken by the population. There are more than 20 000 000 people who live in the island.

In reality, the politic capital is Sri Jayawardenapura but Colombo is the largest city, located in the west of the country.

After the last elections in Sri Lanka (January 2010), Mahinda Rajapksa has been reelected as the president of the country.

The national anthem of Sri Lanka is : click here to listen this anthem.

From the ancient period date some remarkable archaeological sites including the ruins of Sigiriya, the so-called "Fortress in the Sky", and huge public works.

Since ancient times Sri Lanka was governed by monarchs, mostly of the Sinha royal dynasty that lasted over 2000 years.

Sri Lanka has been colonised by the Portuguese first, in 1505. Then, the Dutch arrived in Sri Lanka during the 17th century. Last, The British East India Company established control of the island in 1796, although the island would not be officially connected with British India.

Sri Lanka declared its independance on February 4th, 1948.

We can notive that during World War II, the island served as an important Allied military base.

Sri Lanka is one of the biggest producer of tea in the world. It exports more than 20% of global tea.

Ceylon tea was created in 1867 by a Scott man. Nowaday, some tea producers are helped by the Fair trade organization.

70% of the Sri Lankan population are Buddhists.

...around 15% of the population are Hinduists, 8% are Muslims and the others are Christians.

This is my first penpal by snail mail. Her name is Sindhuri, she's 16 years old and she's from a city called Kandy, located in the center of Sri Lanka. Today, she's really a good friend for me and she taught me many things about her country. Thanks ^^.

Lastly, in 2009, the Sri Lankan civil war was officially finished. This war caused the death of than 65 000 people and lasted more than 35 years.

In fact, the Sri Lankan population is composed of two majority ethnies : the Tamil (18% of the ppulation) the Sinhalese one (82% of the population). The two ethnies didn't agree about some matters. That's why some Tamils decided to create a separatist organisation called the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam) in order to get independance of the Northern region of Sri Lanka. But this organisation waged much violence and led to the Sri Lankan Civil war. Consequently, some countries considered this organisation as a terrorist group.

It has been one of the longest conflicts in Asia.

The currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee.

1 roupee = 100 cents.

Many ricefields compose the Sri Lankans landscapes because Sri Lanka is the 19th producer of rice in the World.

3 languages are spoken in Sri Lanka: English, Tamil and Sinhalese.

You can learn Tamil on this site :here

Or if you want to learn Sinhalese, you can go on this site : here.

Sigiriya is an important archeological site. Indeed, it's a popular tourist destination. It is well-known for its paintings and for its ancient fortress.

Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, world famous for its well preserved ruins of the Great Sri Lankan Civilization. The Civilization which was built upon this city was one of the greatest civilizations of Asia and in the world. The city now a UNESCO heritage site, lies 205 km north of the current capital Colombo in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.

This is the tooth relic temple of Kandy.

In this city, there is a tooth relic of the Buddha which is the object of a very popular feast which takes place in the day of the birthday of the Buddha.

That feast is called Perahera. It is celebrated every summer. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and nicely decorated elephants. That's why elephants are really sacred in that country.

I made a video about Sri Lanka click here .
